Worried about your home security?

I'm very passionate about home security systems. I believe that prevention is better than a cure, so over the years I've learned a great deal about how to keep potential intruders out of my home--both physically, with high-security doors and windows, and psychologically, with deterrents and markers that indicate my home is simply not worth the effort. To help you do the same, I've started a blog to discuss low-cost ways of protecting your home that are effective and entirely within the bounds of reasonableness. I'll also be explaining how these measures don't have to be unsightly; you'll find no ugly chain-link fences here!

Options You can Include in a Home Security System

When installing security measures for your home, you can choose a simple setup of a few cameras or take a comprehensive approach that includes alarms, lights, and door and window sensors. A security system installation expert can advise on the possibilities, but here are some things you could include.

Lighting

Lighting is a straightforward way to make your home unappealing to burglars who want to be able to hide in the dark. You can have the lights hardwired into your electrical system or install solar-powered LED lights, whereby the solar panels charge the battery in the daytime.

Some security lights have a day-night sensor, and they turn on automatically and stay on continuously when it gets dark. Others have motion detection technology, which activates the light, and a timer that shuts it down after two minutes or another preset time.

Your installer can suggest the best positions, taking your yard into consideration. Lights can help protect the windows at the side and back of your house, which can be dark and vulnerable.

 Cameras

Cameras are another crucial security element; they both deter criminals and provide evidence if your home is broken into. Typically, cameras are fitted over the doors and windows at a height that will provide a comprehensive viewpoint without being vulnerable to tampering. They are sometimes installed under the eaves for protection.

If you want the cameras to be functional at night, choose models with a low LUX value, which means they can operate in low-light conditions. These cameras often emit infrared light, which they use to generate pictures in the dark.

The quality of the footage is also important, as you want clear, useful pictures. The higher the camera's resolution, the more detail it can capture and the better-quality images it will produce.

Door and Window Sensors

Other crucial security system components you could install are door and window sensors. These sensors detect the opening of a door or window and send a signal to the control panel to activate the alarm.

One sensor is on the frame, and an adjacent sensor is on the window or door. The connection between the two sensors is broken once the door or window is opened, thus triggering the technology.

As soon as a burglar hears an alarm, they will likely try to escape. You can make your home more secure by putting stickers about the security system on the windows as an advertisement and a deterrent.
